Comet 2006/M4 SWAN
Taken 10/27/2006
It was taken remotely from Mayhill New
Mexico using the Rent-A-Scope telescope known as AREO-3. This telescope is
a Takahashi Sky 90 with a SBIG-10xme CCD camera, all mounted on a Bisque
Paramount.
The image itself is a mosaic of 3
separate RGB images. Each RGB image is composed of 3 to 12 subframes of 60
seconds each. That is a total exposure time of 18 minutes. I also shot
luminance frames but elected not to use them. The color frames were shot
unbinned.
The total angular distance of the tail
is over 3 degs.

Horsehead Nebula in Orion Just playing around
with binning and exposure times. I also whacked the curves . I had some
trouble subtracting dark frames so it is quite noisy. It is still better
than any image I could have ever imaged I would take.
- Taken 1/30/05
- Tak Sky90 w/SBIG st10xe LRGB 12 frames binned at 1x1
2x2 3x3 at various times from 180sec to 300sec.

of a Globular Cluster. We recently had a speaker at our astronomy society

fascinating .

M42 I know its been done
billions and billions of times. But not by me. Orion must hold a dear spot
for most astronomers. It is always visible but you would hardly recognize
it using this CCD stuff.

M45 It really does not pick
up on the reflecting nebula aspect of the PLEIADES. But that is what you
get for only using a 1 sec exposure.

M97 I thought I would try
something really faint and amorphous. M97 is really really faint and

physics.

M101 My first image at Rent

it was a great picture to my standards.

M106 I thought I would go
nuts and use lots of frames and lots of exposure time. An awful lot of
combining to do. If the sky is dark I prefer just to use a longer
exposure.

NGC891 Sombrero was not up
yet. I really like edge on galaxies so this really filled the bill. It was
a full moon that night. Also I pushed the curves a bit to bring out some
color.

NGC2237 I really like the
wide angle of the Sky 90. I was looking for something just big enough to
fill the frame. This telescope camera combination has a 68x101 acrminute

NGC 6960 and 6992 Bridal Veil Nebula
I just wanted to take a shot of the Veil Nebula. Little did I know it was
HUGE. it is like 3º across. So being a glutton for punishment I delved in
to Photoshop. I used Miracle merge or some such feature and here you have
it. Not to even and a little faint but hey. (Just to be extra geeky I used
Hydrogen alpha for the Luminance frame)

Trapezium in Orion M42 I love the trapezium. It is just wonderful to look at. The brilliance of
the stars is somewhat shown in this image. This was a really short exposure.
Something like half a second. And you can still see the Orion nebula glowing.
Total insanity.

| NOTE: Many of these images were only
possible because of a wildly fascinating facility called
Rent-a-Scope. This facility
allows anyone with web access to take incredible images remotely from a
very dark sky site in New Mexico. The cost for this service is very
moderate considering the extremely high quality of the equipment. Also the
Proprietor is so extremely helpful you cannot help but start to take
stunning pictures in a very short time. It is truly a wonderful time to be
alive. For more Astro Images check out the Gallery at AstroAcres.com I
even took some.
