Space X is a private company that has a contract with NASA to supply the first COTS (that would be Commercial Orbital Transport System)  This launch tested many of the systems and procedure that will be needed to reliably send resupply missions to the ISS.

On this mission they went into orbit tested navigation reentry and recovery systems. They also reignited the rocket motor an the second stage and went up to an 11,000 km orbit..
